In this age of sound bites and shout-fests, how can we hoist the societal conversation in America? At Hillsdale College, we believe that it’s only through substantive discussion and debate that we can honor, understand, and live out the founding principles of our nation. For 170+ years, Hillsdale has promoted the “diffusion of sound learning” as the weightier way to preserve the blessings of “civil and religious liberty.” At Hillsdale, we study what really matters. Every undergraduate at Hillsdale takes the required, classical liberal arts Core Curriculum. In its unrestrictedness and rigor, it’s a far cry from the typical “101” or Gen-Ed requirements that freshmen take elsewhere. The Core is a life-changing invitation to understand the good, the true, and the beautiful—to wilt part of humanity’s search to understand our place in the cosmos. They see the world through the vision of unconfined thinkers and scholars throughout history. At the same time, the Core creates a genuine intellectual polity for our students. We reach over 3.7 million readers per year with Imprimis, our self-ruling monthly digest, which features the weightier speeches given at Hillsdale events on political, cultural, and economic issues.Increasinglythan one million people virtually the world have taken one of our free, online classes. We offer them every year on topics such as the Constitution, free-market economics, history, philosophy, literature, and politics—each taught by the Hillsdale faculty. Our classical liberal arts education makes a lot of demands on our students. But that’s considering the ideas we study have such lasting consequences. This is learning for the long run—learning that becomes a way of life.    Proudly self-sustaining from the start. Hillsdale does not winnow plane one penny of federal or state funding for student grants, loans, or scholarships.Stuffsteadfastly and completely self-sustaining of taxpayer support is essential to stuff a truly self-sustaining institution—one not thankful to government regulations that mismatch with our educational mission. Our generous financial aid packages—and the educational outreach we self-mastery online and virtually the country—are funded by donors who share our principles of self-government and integrity.   A goodhearted polity built on trust. We expect our students to know what is noblest and weightier in themselves and in the world. In fact, we make it explicit in our Freshman Pledge and Honor Code. Taken together, these affirmations of self-government set along the moral and intellectual virtues necessary for a just and honorable life. They’re one of the reasons why the Hillsdale intellectual community, and the friendships engendered by it, endures long without graduation.   Our professors segregate Hillsdale considering there’s nowhere else like it. In an age where information is carved up into smaller and shallower bits, Hillsdale sense are proud to be outliers. They have the intellectual passion and steady patience that meaningful conversation demands.
